First Period Experience

Where were you when your first period started? How old were you? Did you talk to your mom, friends? What was your initial reaction? Retrospectively, could it have been different or more positive experience, and, if so, how?

Big Mouthed Mother

I was 12.5, we had gone out of town for a nice dinner. While in the restaurant (and wearing my sister's skirt) AF decided to make her grand appearance. So embarrassed. I went and told my mom, who announced it to the whole table. We stopped by her friends house afterward so I could get a pad. There was no trash in the bathroom, so I stuffed the wrappers in my bra. My mother absolutely humiliated me for the next six years by always announcing AF to all of her friends, I hated her for that!

First Period Experience

When I had my first period I was 13 years old and in the sixth grade. I was home for summer vacation and I was playing basketball outside and I had noticed it. I was so scared at the time and didn't understand what was happening to me because my mother never talked to me about it. I was too scared to tell her or anyone else because I never really had that type of relationship with my foster mother. I went 7 days just changing tissue every hour hoping that it would go away. The next day I decided that I would have to tell in case it happens again. I told her about it and she told me, "welcome to the club!".

It happened at the movies...

I was in grade eight and was at the movie theatre with two of my friends. I went to the washroom after the movie and *poof*. I wasn't really expecting it even though I knew exactly what it was. I whispered to my friend "I need a pad or something!" So she gave me money for the dispenser. Unforunately the tampon got stuck in the machine and my other friend had to bang the box until it fell out. Everyone was staring and laughing at me and finally it came out of the machine and my friend held it up and yelled, "It's all yours!"

...it was embarassing...

Rearranging the furniture

It was 10 days after my 10th birthday. My parents and brother and I were moving furniture around in the living room. I went to the bathroom and saw the blood. I called my mom in and she got me pad. When I went back in the living room my brother had a smile on his face like he wanted to laugh at me but knew he would get in trouble. My dad said, "You need to stop growing up so fast." I just ignored them and tried to pretend nothing happened. It was HARD!! Cause I was dying to call my friends and tell them!
