First Period Experience

Where were you when your first period started? How old were you? Did you talk to your mom, friends? What was your initial reaction? Retrospectively, could it have been different or more positive experience, and, if so, how?

I was embarrassed!

I started my period for the first time when I was 12 yrs. old. It was during my first week of 7th grade, but luckily I was at home when it happened. I was sitting on my bed doing homework when I noticed my stomach was hurting. I went to the restroom and then, I saw IT! I ran back into my room and hid my undies in the closet. I don't know why I was ashamed. My parents were divorced and I only lived with my mom and older sister so I knew it was a natural thing all girls go through. Fortunately, my mother had taken me shopping for the "puberty essentials" (razors, deodorant, pads, etc.) while I was in 6th grade and so I had whatever I needed. I hid that I had started my period from EVERYONE. I had just started a new school and so I didn't have any friends I could confide in. I finally told on my third day when my cramps were so bad that I sat in the bathroom crying during lunch until another girl took me to the office to call my mom.

Lizzie Borden

I was watching a good TV movie, "The Legend of Lizzie Borden" starring Elizabeth Montgomery. It premiered on ABC that day on February 10, 1975. I was almost 13. My mom provided a big fat pad, but no pain relieving medications, so I spent the next few days unable to bend, while I felt like I was being sliced in half by a pendulum. I hated getting it and still do 34 years later. OMG who invented periods? What a stupid idiot!

I started at 13

I was 13, and noticed it right after school. I was in the 7th grade, and my girlfriend gave me a tampon and that was it.

Camping with Dad and younger brother.

My first period showed up when I was 11 about a month before my 12th birthday. It was mid June and I was on a camping trip with only my Dad and younger brother. My parents were divorced by then so my Mom wasn't on the trip with us. We had been there for a few weeks and on a whim my older sister decided to stop by the campground for the day. She had never showed up randomly before and especially not without her boyfriend. It was just a spur of the moment thing for her.

I still remember the moment it showed up despite this being 8 years ago. I went into our camper to change into jeans when I found the evidence waiting for me. I knew exactly what it was but I was very angry that it showed. After changing and making an impromptu pad out of toilet paper I lay on the bed and cried. I don't know why I was so upset but I felt like it was going to ruin my summer. I also didn't want to tell my Dad it had started. This isn't exactly a conversation a young girl wants to have with her father. After being inside for quite a while my Dad came looking for me and found me mid tears curled up on the bed. He started to prod me for what was wrong and after repeatedly saying it was nothing, I finally blurted out, "IT'S A GIRL THING!" He paused for a moment before his eyes went wide and he jumped up to the door and yelled for my sister.

After telling her what was going on she took me on my first pad buying trip. After returning from the store I took my Dad's cell phone and spent the next 45 minutes on the phone with my Mom. She felt so bad that it happened while with my Dad but was so relieved that I at least had my sister there with me. My Dad pretended like the day never happened and I was content in following suit. I'm still so thankful that my sister picked that day of all days to show up for a visit. That day could have been very traumatizing if I was stuck in that very new situation with just my Dad and my 8 year old brother.

GYM CLASS!!

I was 12 when I first started. My mom and I have are very open and I knew what it was.I was in gym class in 6th grade and this girl in my class was staring at me. I remember thinking what in the world is her problem. When we went to change , I had to use the restroom and found out why she was looking at me. I went to the office and they just handed me a pad and sent me on my way and wouldnt let me call my mom. needless to say I cried for the next hour. My mom called the school the next day not very happy they wouldnt let me go home. Basicly told them the next time my chid comes in that office and wants to come home you better let her!

Dad's House.

I was 10 1/2 years old, and currently at my father's house for a visit (my parent's were divorced), and was in complete DENIAL! I noticed spotting on my panties, and washed them by hand so my dad wouldn't notice. I eventually told my mom about it, and she was soo happy. I couldn't believe why she would be so happy at a time that was so embarrassing to me, but she was.
I think if I was with my mom when it happened it would have been less embarrassing, and less stressful. :-)
