Menarche Ceremony

Did you have a menarche (first period) ceremony? What was it like? Who was there? What gifts did you get? If you have a daughter, will you (or did you) give her a menarche ceremony?

crazy mame 101!!!

The first time I got period, I thought I was cursed. My best friend at the time had jus gotten hers. She told me I was going 2 get mine soon, and she wished it on me. I was so upset with her. Well... needless to say it came and I was TERRIFIED. But when I told my mom she was so happy, we went out 2 eat n she bought me a cake. I was so happy!!! It was like another birthday. Then she told my stepdad who was only her boyfriend at the time. EMBARASSING!!!
If I have a daughter, I'll definately have a menarche ceremony for her, because it makes u feel like it's something 2 be proud of and not ashamed or want 2 hide. I'd even have 1 for her friends 2. If they wanted one.

Did not, but want it for my daughters!

I didn't even TELL my mom when I got my period for the first time... I was THAT ashamed of it. And I don't want my future daughter(s) to feel that way, so when we have 'the talk', I'll tell them that I will let them stay home from school the day they get theirs, and I'll (try to) stay home from work and we'll play hookie. Go see a movie, get a good lunch/dinner, maybe mani/pedi's. Just to help them understand that it's nothing to be ashamed of or embarrassed about, and that it can actually be something to celebrate!

No celebration needed

I did not have come ceremony when I got my period. I think that it is kind of silly to have a ceremony. I never wanted my period when I was younger, and still don't want it. I felt that it really was not something to celebrate. A friend of mine, when she got her period for the first time, her mom gave her a glass of wine. Personally I think that it is kind of dumb. And if I have a daughter, I will talk to her, and if she feels that she needs some sorta celebration, then fine.

I did not have one, but a girl should, something private...

I never had any sort of cermony. My mother never talked to me about periods until my later teens in causal conversation... my mother never talked to me about any personal things like that.

When I have a daughter I will do a little ceremony, nothing big, maybe a girls day out to get our nails done or something, it will be something private between mother and daughter.

I think it is important to recognize that a girl is becoming a woman, it is where girls need to learn how precious their body is and to learn to be a confident woman with self-respect.

Never Had One...

No I didn't have one, but I wish I could have gotten some type of "celebration" or just a gift of some sort, to make me feel liek I was growing up. Actually I never even heard of it until today and would love for my daughter to have some type of celebration, and if she doesnt want that, then she and I will do something special together... maybe have mani/and a pedi and have lunch... a special girls day out, just us two!

Would have loved it

I was already very independent and knew what I wanted and needed when I got my first period. So I wrote my mom a note that I took some money from her to buy tampons. I did my reading beforehand and had talkedto the girls. That was that.
I would have looved a little celebration, some little pampering gift, and a good conversation with a knowledgeable female. It's something I would do for my daughter, if I had one.

Still, I've always had a pretty positive attitude towards my period. Could have been even better with that little extra special treatment.
