Mom and Intro to Periods

How would you say your mom did during your early period years? Exceptional job, making you feel comfortable with your period? Or could she have used some work in that department? Will you do things differently if you have a daughter?

Mom and Intro to Periods

My Early Period Years.

My mom rarely talked about it. She sent me to a class that they were having in school and I learned a lot from my school nurse. I got my first period when I was 11 and of course it wasn't a regular occurence but by the time I was 12 or 13 it became very regular. My mom did show me how to use a pad. I didn't use a tampon until I was 16. I think when I become a mom I will be the one to discuss being a woman with my child first. It's my responsibility to talk to her about those kinds of things.

Great parents = great experience

I am the only girl, the oldest with then, three younger brothers. My BFF started when she was 11, but didn't say much about it because she was pretty grossed out by it! lol! I started my period on Aug 1st 2001. :) I remember that because it was 9 days before my 13th birthday...
We were planning on going into town the day i started... I woke up with stomach cramps... didn't think much of it, until I went to use the bathroom. I saw red on the TP, and new immediately what had just occurred. I knew that my mom had pads under the sink, so I got one (the big overnighters! Ewww!) and put it on. I'm not sure really how I knew, but I just knew how to do all that stuff... Anyhoo, I cleaned up, got dressed and quietly told my mom that I had started... She was "ooohhh my baby is a woman now!" And let me stay home alone while they went into town. Mom wrote me a letter in my notebook that was in the car on the drive into town... telling me how proud she was of me and giving me some advice. My dad was really good about it... getting me ice cream or brownies...:) He even would buy me and my mom pads by himself!

My mom was really great about talking about periods and stuff, but about sex... Nada. LOL! I learned all that through Biology books and stuff. I think that when I'm a mom, I'll gradually tell them a little more about things as they grow up, so that they will have just the right amount of information at the right age!
The funny thing is now, my mom and I can talk about our sex lives... wow. :)

My first Period

When I started my first period, I was 13 yrs. old. My aunt had cancer and My Mom, & Aunts were going to the Mayo Clinic. We were staying at a hotel. I remember I started & went to tell my mom. Of course she told her sisters (my aunts). I was so embarassed! They made a big deal about it. Before they could find a store, they made me wear a washcloth with safety pins. I could of just crawled in a hole right there. They just laughed and said I was a women now. So proud of me. What an experience. Now I have an 11 year old daughter. I have bought all kinds of books to show her and help her as much as I can. We talk about everything!!!

Best mother ever!

My family were all farmers. Nothing about nature was a secret or shameful, so I had a very good idea of what was going to happen before it did. When I had to have a bra in third grade, my mother prepared me for my period, just in case. She bought me the Life Cycle Library, and answered what few questions I had to ask. When I got my period, at eleven, she was calm and went to the store to buy me supplies, and I was kind of pampered without making a big deal over why. Nothing gooey and emotional, just cool. She and I were both there with information and comfort for my much younger sisters when they needed it. Funny though, they were super embarrassed when I was just scientifically interested.

Mom's point of view?!?!?

My mom even though I love her to death was HORRIBLE! I started and thought ok here we go BIG talk time. All she said was "it's good for you" then walked out of the room! I had no idea of what to do or how to do it. I now have an 8 yr old daughter so I am going to get advice from some books and such to talk to her. that was just horrible. I hope that no one else has to figure it all out on their own.
