Question

How often should a pap smear be done?

Answer

Between the ages of 21 and 29 pap smear alone is recommended every 3 years. An HPV test should not be done routinely under the age of 30 because HPV is a very transient infection in this age group and comes and goes. We do "reflex" HPV testing for the high risk types of HPV when the pap smear in this age group comes back with atypical cells to determine if we need to pursue further evaluation.

Between the ages of 30 and 65 a pap smear along with "cotesting" for the high risk types of HPV is done every 5 years. No pap is recommended for women 65 and over and those with a total hysterectomy where the cervix is removed for benign conditions.

These guidelines are for LOW RISK patients only, and do not include those patients who have had prior cervical pre cancers or cancers. These are general guidelines only, and it is very important to go for an annual checkup with your gynecologist even if you are not due for a pap smear. In addition, discuss your personal, individualized situation as to what frequency YOU should be having a pap with your gyn.
