Question
What is different about Yasmin from other OCPs?
Answer
Yasmin has the same estrogen as all other pills, but has a novel
progestational agent called drosperinone, which behaves similarly
to the potassium sparing diuretic called spironolactone.
It has a low side effect profile and is well tolerated.
Patients usually don't get bloated the week before their period with this pill
because of the diuretic like effect. It is excellent for PMS, acne and facial hair growth.
Patients who are worried about bloating and weight gain with the pill usually do quite well with this pill.
