First Period Experience
Where were you when your first period started? How old were you? Did you talk to your mom, friends? What was your initial reaction? Retrospectively, could it have been different or more positive experience, and, if so, how?

I was embarrassed!

I started my period for the first time when I was 12 yrs. old. It was during my first week of 7th grade, but luckily I was at home when it happened. I was sitting on my bed doing homework when I noticed my stomach was hurting. I went to the restroom and then, I saw IT! I ran back into my room and hid my undies in the closet. I don't know why I was ashamed. My parents were divorced and I only lived with my mom and older sister so I knew it was a natural thing all girls go through. Fortunately, my mother had taken me shopping for the "puberty essentials" (razors, deodorant, pads, etc.) while I was in 6th grade and so I had whatever I needed. I hid that I had started my period from EVERYONE. I had just started a new school and so I didn't have any friends I could confide in. I finally told on my third day when my cramps were so bad that I sat in the bathroom crying during lunch until another girl took me to the office to call my mom.
