First Period Experience

Where were you when your first period started? How old were you? Did you talk to your mom, friends? What was your initial reaction? Retrospectively, could it have been different or more positive experience, and, if so, how?

just one of the guys

i was 13, on an all day fishing trip in the mountains with my brother, my uncle and my father. at the beginning of the trip my dad and uncle said i was acting funny and asked if i was going to start my period. i said "NO!" indignantly. it then became the topic of jokes for the next 20 minutes - wouldn't it be embarrassing for 2 men to have to go into safeway and purchase pads! yuk, yuk. all of our worst fears (and jokes) came true towards the end of the day. out fishing on a lake, no amenities, with all boys. i was mortified.

Aunti Flo's first visit..

I was 11,a tomboy and out riding my bike in....white shorts!Glad that when I finally went home nobody had noticed..wouldn't that have been embarrassing?I knew what it was, just wasn't expecting it.Told my gramma and she handed over,to my horror, a giant box of pad mattresses...Retrospectively ..it would have been nice to have advanced warning..I wouldn't have been wearing white..lol

Thank Goodness for School 'Sex Ed' Programs!

in my old school district, EVERY 5th grader is supposed to go through a 'sex ed' discussion. of course, just my luck, the day my school was going to have it we had a snow day. everytime they tried to reschedule, there was some reason for not having school. luckily, the next year we had a class time called: CLUE CLASS. {which is basically like an extra 30 minutes where you get to pick a fun class you want to go to.} my name got called last to pick a class. i got "Girl Things!" {thank goodness!} before going to the class....i didn't know anything about boys, periods, sex....NOTHING. i started my period in 7th grade. {exactly ONE WEEK after my 13th birthday.} everyday after school, i rode the bus from the junior high to the middle school. {where my mom worked.} i needed to use the restroom. so i used the one in the nurse's office. that's when i noticed brownish spotting. it wasn't that bad. so i just used some toilet paper and waited until i got home to use a pad. i had the samples we had gotten from my class. i went downstairs and quickly told my mom as i walked past her. i didn't really give her time to respond before i walked out the door. i've few problems with my period. i love it. {sometimes.} its amazing how God created us. isn't it? :D

Nearly 14

I was 13, a few months shy of my 14th birthday. I was visiting my older (by 10+ years) married cousins, helping them on their farm. I wwoke up one morning with blood on my underwear. Since my mom was a nurse, I knew exactly what it was, so I asked my cousin if she had anything, and she smiled and said, "Sure! You were caught off guard, huh?" I said, "Something like that." It never occurred to me to mention that it was my first one. I didn't think it was that big of a deal. She found out later when my parents and aunt and uncle all met at restaurant prior to me going back home. Mom, my cousin, and aunt were very impressed that I knew "just what to do." Like I said, I kenw it was going to happen eventually, so it wasn't a big deal.

Guilt

My first period was barely a period at all. I was 11 and I had brown spotting. I knew what that meant, so I stole some of my mom's pantiliners. I told no one about that time. My second period was horrible. I woke up with the worst cramps, but I didn't realize they were cramps. I told my mom that I didn't feel good and that I couldn't get out of bed my stomach hurt so bad. My mom must have known right away, because she asked my where it hurt and when I showed her, she handed me two Advil and told me that I needed to get out of bed because we were going to the store for pads. I hadn't even been to the bathroom to see if I was bleeding yet! I felt so embarassed and guilty for not telling her sooner. After our trip to the store, she made me hot buttered rum and told me to relax and enjoy being a woman. Enjoy being a woman? Sure, but I certainly don't enjoy my period!!!

My First Period....

I started my first period when i was 15!! i started in the 10th grade...biology class. i had to pull my poor teacher aside and ask her for a pad. i remember that i started so much later than all my friends (most of them started at 9, 10 or 11) and I was afraid that something was wrong with me. I actually remembering hoping that it would come so that I would feel normal. my first period was hardly a period, no cramps, no headaches, no bloating, no need for midol whatsoever. i actually didn't sdtart getting the extra stuff until much much later (probably college).my period was different and has been ever since!
