First Period Experience
Where were you when your first period started? How old were you?
Did you talk to your mom, friends? What was your initial reaction? Retrospectively, could it have been
different or more positive experience, and, if so, how?

First Period Experience
"She just started her lady time..."
When I was 11 years old I started my period for the first time. I remember it so well. I was sitting in my 5th grade class in the 2nd row. I asked my teacher if I could go to the bathroom and she said yes. Our classroom had a bathroom in the back right corner so I rushed back there, pulled down my undies, and "AHHHH!!!" I literally started screaming at the top of my lungs. My teacher started banging on the door. I pulled up my undies and opened the door. I was bawling. She took me outside, sat down on the steps, and she explained to me what was going on with my body. I was mortified. She called my grandparents (they raised me) and told them what was going on. They said they'd be to the school in just a few minutes. So, I waited in the office for them to pick me up. My grandfather, of all people, was the one to come get me. We ride home in silence until he says, "Well, I reckon we need to get you some lady products!" So, we stopped at the store and he walked down the isle and blurted out to a young girl that was standing in the same isle, "She just started her lady time so what would you recommend?" I don't remember if she said anything or not but I do remember we ended up going home with some jumbo pads.

First Period Experience
My Awkward Moments
I was 9 years old ,I was at a family reunion. I had no idea what a period was. My mom had not told me yet. My oldest sister was the one who helped me, she was Ten years my senior. That time was not a good time for me. When I finally got home I learned about it from a BOOK my mom was not a good resource. The book was a hardback, it was about fertility. When I went back to school[this happened during the summer] none of the girls around me seemed to have theirs. I remember feeling alone. It was not good.So it could have been a better experience.I was very young, if my mother had known it would have happened that young she would have told me sooner. I guess it all goes with growing up and feeling awkward. In retrospect I have always been open with my daughter. She will not be caught by surprise. She is almost 11.

First Period Experience
When you least expect or want it to happen!
I was the grand old age of 15. and I guess I was a little worried about being the last of my frinds to have started. I was on a 20 mile hike for an award scheme with the school. We were walking along and felt a slight gush, I had to wait till I got to the toilets at the other end before i could check. Not expecting it to come at that time I had no protection on me, nor did any of my friends, luckily the female camp leader had some tampons and gave me a lecture about being prepared, once i explained it was my first she was very supportive. I guess I learned to use tampons really early on!!! :-)

First Period Experience
Not prep'd for first period
When I got my first period I was 13 and had only a vague notion of what menstruation was about. I never got a pre-talk from my mom and I have no recollection of talking about the coming event with my girlfriends. So when it happened, I was not prepared at all. I told my mom and then she explained about it. I do not remember talking about it with any of my friends right away. At a sleepover months later we had a period powwow and I was amazed at everyone's different experiences. Some said their mom had prepared them and other friends said they were as clueless as me. One girl said her period started at 9 and I was happy mine came much later.
