First Period Experience

Where were you when your first period started? How old were you? Did you talk to your mom, friends? What was your initial reaction? Retrospectively, could it have been different or more positive experience, and, if so, how?

9 YEARS OLD!

Well I can't remember much, but I do remember that I was 9 YEARS OLD. I was in the 4th grade. That seems so young now that I'm repeating this. The wierd thing is that I had a couple of friends my age that started thier period before I did. Go figure!

April Fool's period.

I think I was around 11 when I first started, and we were on our way to New Orleans to visit my sister. When it happened, I had no idea what was going on so I didn't say anything to anyone. Then when we got to my sister's, my mom noticed and talked to me about it. I was too scared and embarrassed to tell anybody what was going on. I'll be honest in saying that nobody had talked to me about it before it happened because I was believed to be too young to have a period at that age. I figure my mom was going to wait until I was a year older. Luckily I was in no pain or anything but it was pretty scary to ride for 10 hours in a car with that happening. The irony was it first happened on April Fool's Day. Later on I just laughed about it. In all honesty I wish I had been more prepared for the event and I think I would have handled it better, but I can't blame anybody for that. It's just a part of growing up.

Babysitter's Worst Nightmare

So, I'd had "the talk" from my mom and school had done it's part to clue me in, but I didn't know when that day was going to come when I was that much closer to "becoming a woman". One night in July between 6th and 7th grade, I was babysitting for some people who went to our church. I knew them a little but I'd never babysat for them before. We were all watching a movie and I had to use the bathroom and discovered a brownish stain, much to my horror. I didn't know what to do, and Ididn't have a single pad or anything with me. After I got out, I checked on the kids and then escaped upstairs to call my mom. She said she was very proud of my courage to call and tell her and not to be scared. I asked her what I should do because I didn't have anything and she told me the typical places in a woman's house where she keeps those sorts of things. She explained how to use a pad over the phone and I was left to snoop around the bathroom. I asked mom what I should tell the lady I was babysitting for because I felt horribly guilty that I was going to go snooping in her house, and my mom said I should just tell her because she'd understand. I found what I was looking for and the evening resumed. When the parents got home I pulled the mom aside, and not having the heart to tell her that it was my first one, I told her I'd gotten my period unexpectedly and went in her bathroom for a pad. She appreciated that I'd told her, but said I could help myself to anything in the house anytime. It was quite the experience for me, and I had to do it all without my mom except on the phone! I certainly wouldn't wish that experience on anyone =)

Something I Planned to Ignore Forever

This may seem weird, but I don't remember when I started my period, just the embarrassment and horror of my first experiences with it. It was sometime before 7th grade because I remember being scared to start Jr. High with it. I didn't tell anyone, I used toilet paper for who knows how long, my parents were divorced and I lived with my dad. My older sister was private about hers so I didn't know who to turn to. I planned on never telling anyone about it, and even began to strategize about how to get the tissue paper to last longer! I knew what it was when I got it, because of school. None of my friends had started that I knew of.
I was at an amusement park with my best friend once while being on, and I thought I could handle a water ride...wrong?the blood seeped through my now wet pad and was on my shorts all day! My friend noticed and asked me about it...I told her I sat on a red bench that rubbed red paint on me. She said this wasn't very likely and I did my best to get her to believe me. I was so mortified I held back my tears and said I didn't feel good and that I needed to go home.
Once after using the bathroom, I left my bloody tissue in the trash(I normally flushed them, don't know why I trashed them that time)My older sister saw and asked if I had started, I lied and said I hadn't but she knew. She said she had started and that she could get me pads. I stuck with my first reply and she said "fine, when you decide to stop living like a caveman, let me know" which I gave into shortly after. I was very relieved to finally have supplies!! We never told my dad we needed anything, my sis called mom and told her, and she called dad and told him what to buy! What a private family!! I didn't tell my mom, my sister did and when my mom called me excited that I had started I was horrified that she knew and that my sister would do such a thing as tell my mom something that was so personal to me! I will make sure my daughters know it is nothing to be ashamed of!

Holiday Break

I was 12 and it was Dec 28th. Bummer huh? No skipping school for me we were already on a break. I was watching tv and I had been feeling cramps for a couple days before that day but I thought it was gas. This day I remember it being extremely painful went to the bathroom and ta-daa!. I knew what it was and I told my mom right away and I was proud of becoming a woman. It was funny because my sister was older then me (she was 14 at the time) and she still hadn't started. At the time I felt like I was wiser, smarter, and physically older then her because of that. lol

Skipping School

I was twelve when I had my first period and my mom had already explained what was going to happen, so I wasn't freaked out. I woke up one morning and I had pink on my underwear. I told my mom and she asked me if I wanted to stay home from school. I didn't have cramps or anything and I didn't feel sick, but I said yes just so I could skip school.
