to test or not to test? ovulation confussion

Ovulation/fertile days....they are finally here! Weird ovulation cycle for me this month. Usually I have the clear stretchy mucus for two days....not so much this month. Did an ovulation test and it did say that I would be ovulating, but because hardly any mucus came about I'm wondering if we even had the chance to get pregnant. We've been trying for 5months and nothing yet! Hopefully it wasn't a wasted month. Also ovulation kits tell me to start testing 9days later which I think is probably too early, anyone else think so or do you start testing when it tells you to. Thought this baby thing would be much easier
