Help?! pregnant or skipped period

so, my husband and I arent trying, but not really preventing either, just kinda see what happens. Anyway, I have been on BC for 10 years straight except for the last 10 months. This is the first time in my life I am late, I am now a month late and still no period and still Negative pregnancy tests. My husband has been working out of town so if i was pregnant I would be 8 weeks already. I was sick with a sore throat the month i missed my period. Anyway, what i need to know is, could i be this far along and be getting negatives (i know theres a chance, but how likely?) , and if i skipped cause i was sick when should i expect my next period? back on my normal sched? because if so that would be today-couple days and no cramping so far. I have insurance but havent met my deductible, so when should i go see a dr. instead of waiting it out because unless im pregnant or a serious problem, id rather forego the dr. ...any help would be great! ( p.s.. this would be my first so i dont know what "feeling" pregnant would be like)
