Am I hoping too much?

Hubby & I got married in July and decided to try to have kids sooner rather than later. I am 33 & he is 38 so we know that if we want kids at all, we need to start trying.

I went off the pill right after the wedding (I had been on the pill since I was 17 due to heavy periods). In August, I was 4 days late & didn't have a normal period, at least for me. It was only 3 days & pretty light unlike the usual 4 days with 2 heavy days. We tried again around the ovulation date predicted on this site. On Monday, a week before my period is due, I had spotting heavy enough for a tampon in the morning & then it went to nothing. Yesterday there was no spotting & today there is light spotting. I have also been crampy, hungry & exhausted but no real breast tenderness or nausea.

What is up with my body? I am confused if I may be preggo & had a very light period the first time with spotting now. I really want to take one of the early detection pregnancy tests given my body's craziness lately but not sure if I should wait until the expected period next week.
