Spotting before AF due?

I am cycle day 23 and 12dpo. AF is expected Tuesday. Since Friday I have been having light spotting only after using the bathroom. It is old blood and not something I have ever experienced before AF arrived. Normally AF just wham appears. Anyone experience this and end up pregnant? I am driving myself nuts! But I refuse to buy a pregnancy test until I am late as I hate the disappointment of testing negative and getting AF the next day.
