late period with negative test results

I'm on day 40 of my cycle, my cycle usually is about 30 days or a little less. I took a pregnancy test today and it was negative. I've been trying to get pregnant for awhile now, but havn't had any luck yet... I don't know what to think, I was excited but, now I'm sad that I got a negative result.
