A little wine and a shower go a loooong way
I deal with massive cramps on day one of my period. The best things I do is this:
1) Put the shower on REALLY hot. Lay down in the shower. Aim the shower head so that it points right on my abdomen. The heat helps and the shower feels like a little massage on my belly.
2) WINE. My mother would put it in my soda as a kid. I think it has something to do with the alcohol thinning out my blood. But it always helps.
Normally after I do these things I'm comfortable enough to sleep the rest of the cramping off.

Catnip is awesome
Catnip......either as tea or ground and put into capsules for ease of consumption away from home. Works wonders....even better than prescribed pain-killers for me, and no side-affects except for added interest from kitties....*laughs*

Sleep it off!
My solution to my menstrual cramps is to sleep it off under three warm blankets and if it gets worse then I'll take some painkillers if I have to.

I have Endometriosis so I have to deal with the cramping a week before my period. I normally take Naproxen but lately have found that some simple stretching seems to do the trick in the beginning. As for when the actual period hits me...I just wing it. I do stretching but always end up with the Naproxen again. Nothing more to do but wait it out.

A susbstitution for the water bottle
To calm my cramps I love to have a hot cup of chamomile tea and a hot shower. This of course doesnt' last very long. For a more prolonged relief I like to use a home made heating pad. It consists of using a small sack or if you don't have time to sew a sack you could use sock and fill it with rice (uncooked) put it some popuri to add scent and warm it on the microwave for a minute or so (depending on the amount of rice you use). This last longer than the warm bottle. Keep the bottle for hydration, that is always good! :)

Not much...
Well, I always end up getting cramps when I want to go out so I have to take a couple of paracetamol, grin and bear it usually! If I'm at home I'll get a hot water bottle and keep it on my stomach for a while, but if they get to thier really bad stage then there's absolutely nothing I can do about it!
