After four children, some things have gotten easier. In my younger days, PMS symptoms were horrible and cramping was enough to bring me to my knees and I tried a variety of herbal and regular remedies, but one thing that did help was a simply natural approach. A week before my period I would cut down on caffeine (coffee and pop), and increase my consumption of citrus fruits and juices. During my period, I would continue watching what I ate and drank and did exercises, including sit ups and stomache crunches - I did not go hot wild on these, but even a little bit helps. Watching and reducing stress levels also helped too. The greater the stress the more painful the period.
